How to measure the paint thickness correctly?

If someone says that there are standards for the thickness of the factory varnish, he tells us a fairy tale. How to check if the paint will be original? We advise you how to measure it. When looking at used cars, customers pull out the paint thickness gauge from their pockets and do well. This is the best way to possibly detect the repaired areas.

For this purpose, a magnetic varnish gauge is used, which has a pull-out stylus with scale and magnetic tip. We put it to the body and pull until it breaks away. The weaker you hold on to the element, the less the stylus will slide out. The thicker the paint, the weaker the magnet adheres. This is how we will learn more or less what element has been improved.

Cars and repair techniques are changing and now it may even turn out that the electronic meter will not be enough. Plastic, aluminium, steel. More and more cars have external body parts made of different materials. Here it may turn out that checking the thickness of the paint can be a bit difficult.

However, sometimes it is worth looking for someone who has such professional equipment and can perform such accurate measurement for us. Some meters will work only on steel, others on aluminum, but there are also meters that can be moved.

What is the correct paint thickness?

Even if we already have this meter, it will not be difficult to measure the thickness of the varnish, but we will not know how much of the varnish is to be. It turns out that there is no standard that determines how thick the car body paint should be. When talking about varnish, we should take into account all the coatings that are there. It will be difficult to determine the paint, as it can be between 80 and 150 microns at the factory, but it can also have 200 and sometimes 250 microns, when due to a paint defect, the vehicle was painted twice.

Of course, the thicker the layer the better, because in this way we have a better anti-corrosion coating, but there are also doubts when measuring whether the car was perhaps painted whole?

When can I consider a paint to be non-fabricated?

If most elements have a standard size of more than 100 microns and a few small elements are twice as thick. Then it was a sign that the varnisher took part in this place.

What reveals the repair of car paintwork?

Of course, the internal part of the post should be efficient, where there should be less paint at the factory. In addition, the left and right threshold, left and right post should be examined symmetrically. If the difference in thickness is a few dozen percent or more, it is a sign that the varnisher was also working here.
